Details

Banteay Srei is a beautiful temple at one hour drive from Siem Reap.

Built in the 10th century, it’s dedicated to Hindu gods Shiva and Parvati. It’s about a 25 kilometer drive from other temples.

The carvings on the red sandstone are amazing, and they’re in great shape even though the temple is old. It’s smaller than other temples in Angkor, but it’s still impressive and many people consider it the best example of Khmer art.

Two important people, Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha, helped build the temple for King Rajendravarman II. Yajnavaraha was also a teacher to the next king, Jayavarman V.

The temple’s nickname is “Citadel of Women” because of the beautiful carvings of female devata figures. Some people also think it got this name because the temple is small and the carvings are delicate.

Over time, the temple has been added to, fixed, and even robbed! But people have worked hard to restore it, especially in the 1930s and today. Even though some things were stolen and broken, the temple is still amazing.

Banteay Samré, also known as “The Citadel of the Samré.”

This temple is like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The early 12th century, and during the reign of Suryavarman II, Banteay Samré emerges, standing proudly in the Angkor Wat style. Named after the ancient Samré people of Indochina, this temple shares its elegance with the renowned Banteay Srei.

As you stroll through, you’ll notice the intricate layout—a single tower connected to a mandapa, flanked by two libraries, and embraced by two concentric gallery enclosures. It’s like a puzzle waiting to be unraveled, hinting at the temple’s importance in its heyday.
