Siem Reap Afternoon Countryside Private Tour

Three hours, five stops, and not a temple in sight.

The temples close in on you after a day or two. This is the afternoon that resets it: out past the last hotel at two o'clock, into working villages where a family still makes medicine out of bark and roots, the market sells to the people who live there, and the last stop is sticky rice roasted in bamboo and split open hot in your hands. Your own guide, your own driver, back at your hotel by five.

Why book this afternoon

The half day that needs no ticket

  • No Angkor Pass, so nothing to add on top. This route stays outside the Angkor Archaeological Park. Every temple-based afternoon in Siem Reap costs you a $37 pass per person before the tour itself. This one does not, which closes most of the gap before you have compared anything else.
  • Private, with a guide and a driver. Two people looking after you, not one driver doubling as both. It is your group only, so you stop when something catches you and leave when you are ready, and you are never waiting on strangers in the heat.
  • Real families, at work, in their own afternoon. The pharmacist explaining what the roots are for, the weavers pulling water hyacinth out of the flooded fields, the woman tending the kralan fire. Your guide introduces and translates. Nobody performs.
  • This is not a shopping tour. No commission stop, no showroom, no handicraft centre with a till at the exit. Every place you stop is a working farm, a working market or a family home.

Vintage Jeep

A restored Willys with a soft canvas top for shade and the sides left open to the air. We re-engine ours and fit automatic gearboxes, so they ride quiet and smooth rather than loud and rattly. The easiest option for families, and the better one in the afternoon heat.

Vespa

One classic Vespa per guest, each with its own local driver, and your guide alongside the whole way. You ride pillion with nothing to do but look, and the small frame gets down the narrow dirt paths between the paddies that a car cannot take.

2 PM · Out of town, and the first farm
2:00 PMYour Jeep or Vespa collects you from your hotel door. Ten minutes and the hotels stop, the road narrows, and you are into the rice fields.
First stopA working farm. What is happening depends on the season and the hour, which is the point of coming out at all: this is a family's afternoon, not a demonstration laid on for a schedule.
Mid-afternoon · The pharmacy and the market
NextA traditional Khmer pharmacy, where a family still makes remedies out of bark, roots and seeds. Your guide translates, and it is worth asking what they would give you for a cold.
ThenThe village produce market. It sells to the people who live here and not to visitors, so nobody will follow you down the aisle trying to sell you anything.
Late afternoon · Weavers, the kralan fire, then home
Fourth stopA house weaving water hyacinth, pulled out of the flooded fields and turned into baskets and mats. It grows faster than anyone can use it, so a weed becomes a living.
Last stopA family making kralan: sticky rice and coconut packed into a length of green bamboo, roasted over an open fire, then split open hot for you to eat standing there. This is the note the afternoon ends on.
5:00 PMYour driver has you back at your hotel, three hours after you set off, in time to shower before dinner.

This is your private tour, so the timings flex around you and the weather. Five stops in three hours is an unhurried pace, not a checklist. Tell your guide what you most want to linger over and they will shape the afternoon around it.

The moment

They split the bamboo open in front of you

You cannot buy this one at the end. It only exists for about a minute.

Kralan is sticky rice, coconut milk and black beans packed into a length of green bamboo and stood over a fire until the outside chars. It is a Khmer thing, sold at roadside stalls all over Cambodia, and almost nobody who buys one has watched it made.

Here you are standing at the fire while it happens. The bamboo hisses, the char goes on unevenly, and somebody who has done it several thousand times decides when it is ready. Then they take a blade to it, peel the case back in strips, and hand you the rice still steaming in its own bamboo skin. Warm, sweet, faintly smoky. It is the last stop of the afternoon and it is the one people talk about afterwards.

Excellent Vespa tour!. What a wonderful experience! Our drivers and tour guide showed up a little early which was perfect since that allowed us to get started right away. We each had our own scooter driver and a separate guide. We first stopped at Apopo which was incredible to see what these African pouch rats have been trained to do in helping to find landmines throughout Cambodia. It was also fun to hold one of them for a few moments! Then we stopped at a very large market and were given a thorough tour by our guide. It was fascinating to see so many different goods and services in one place. Everyone was incredibly kind and let us take photos when we asked. We followed that with a visit to a Buddhist monastery in the countryside. We were given a tour of the beautiful surroundings and offered a blessing by a young monk. Such a unique experience! Finally, we motored to a private home where we were treated to a absolutely fabulous lunch while gazing at the nearby farmlands and rice paddies. We loved riding on the back of the Vespas and being out in the countryside. The drivers were excellent. We always felt safe, well cared for and were encouraged to ask questions. We made sure to tip each of our drivers and the guide for excellent service. Highly recommend!

Fantastic day out. Really fantastic tour on the Vespas - thanks so much to our three guides who made us feel safe and looked after us really well. They took us to see the mine detecting rats (brilliant visit) which was unexpected, and the lake and lunch. Really a super day out.

Great day of adventure in Siem Reap. We had a wonderful time visiting the countryside, investigating towns' open air markets, watching agriculture being harvested from a local homestead, eating delicious locally prepared food, stopping in a monastery and receiving blessing from a kind monk, taking a boat cruise to an ancient site on a reservoir, and visiting a center that trains rats to save lives! It was a perfect day!

Do I need an Angkor Pass for this tour?

No. This route stays in the countryside outside the Angkor Archaeological Park, so there is no Angkor Pass to buy and nothing to add to the $75. That is a $37 per person saving against any temple-based afternoon. If you are doing the temples on another day, buy that pass online in advance at angkorenterprise.gov.kh rather than queueing at the gate.

What makes this different from the cheaper countryside tours?

Three things, and they are the three that cost money. It is private, so it is your group and nobody else's. You get a guide and a driver, two people, rather than one driver doing both jobs in broken English. And you travel by restored vintage Jeep or by Vespa with your own driver, not by tuk-tuk or bicycle.

On top of that there is no Angkor Pass to buy and no shopping stop to sit through. If what you want is the cheapest way to see a rice field, we are honestly not it. If you want three hours where somebody explains what you are looking at, we are.

Is the village visit real, or is it staged for tourists?

Real. These are working places on a working afternoon: a farm, a pharmacy that sells to its neighbours, a market where the produce is for the village, a house weaving water hyacinth, and a family who make kralan for a living. Nothing is set up for an arrival time and nothing is performed. The trade-off is honest: what is happening depends on the day and the season, so no two afternoons run identically.

Is this a shopping tour in disguise?

No. There is no commission stop, no showroom and no handicraft centre with a till at the exit. If you want to buy something at the market or from a family, you are welcome to, and your guide will help you do it properly. Nobody gets a cut and nothing is built into the route to make that happen.

Do you visit a floating village on Tonlé Sap?

No, and it is worth being clear about because several Siem Reap countryside tours bundle one in. Tonlé Sap is a different trip in a different direction, and squeezing it into three hours means a long drive and a rushed boat. This afternoon stays inland in the farming villages.

Is it actually private?

Yes. Your group only, with your own guide and your own driver, and no other guests joining. You set the pace, linger where you want to and skip what does not interest you.

Jeep or Vespa, and do I have to drive?

You never drive on this tour. The vintage Jeep comes with its driver and the Vespa comes with its own local driver per guest, so you ride pillion and look around. Pick either when you book. In the afternoon heat most guests take the Jeep for the canvas shade; the Vespa gets down the narrow paths between the paddies that the Jeep cannot.

What time does it start, and will I see the sunset?

Pickup is at 2 PM from your hotel and you are back by 5 PM. You will not see the sunset on this tour: sunset in Siem Reap falls later than five all year round, so the afternoon finishes before it. If watching the sun go down over the rice fields is the thing you want, tell us when you book and we will point you at a tour that ends later.

How much walking is there? Will it suit older or less mobile guests?

Very little. You are driven between all five stops and the walking at each one is short and flat, on village paths and market ground. It suits most ages and most fitness levels. The Jeep is the easier vehicle to get in and out of, so say so when you book if that matters.

Can we bring children? Is there a discount?

Yes, and a three-hour afternoon suits children better than a full day does. Children aged 4 to 12 get 30% off, which brings it to $52.50, and under-4s go free. On both the Jeep and the Vespa children ride as passengers with the driver, and a child seat can be fitted on the Jeep on request. Mention ages when you book.

Is the countryside worth it if I have already seen Angkor?

That is the usual reason people book it. Angkor is the empire; this is the country it left behind, and most visitors fly home having seen only the first one. Three hours is enough to fix that without giving up a whole day of a short trip.

Is lunch included?

No, this is an afternoon tour and there is no meal stop. You will eat kralan, hot, at the last stop, and you are back at your hotel by five in good time for dinner. If you want a proper Khmer lunch at a farm over the rice fields, that is the full-day countryside tour rather than this one.

What should I wear and bring?

Light clothes that cover your shoulders, closed shoes you do not mind dusting, sunglasses and sunscreen. Two o'clock is the hottest part of the day, so bring a hat. Water is provided throughout.

What happens if it rains?

The tour runs. Siem Reap rain usually arrives in short heavy bursts rather than all afternoon, we carry ponchos, and the Jeep has a canvas top. The villages do not stop for it and neither do we.

I grew up inside the walls of Angkor Wat, in the pagoda where my grandfather, Loung Sake, served as Grand Abbot. The pagoda still stands today, just inside the enclosure.

Girls weren't allowed to sleep in the monastery, so I shaved my head and dressed as a boy to stay close to him. He taught me Sanskrit on palm leaves.
