Beng Mealea is the Angkor-period temple that nobody rebuilt. It sits about 40 km east of the main Angkor group, an hour from Siem Reap by road, and most of it is still lying where it fell. Tree roots have levered the galleries apart, pediments lie face-down in the grass, and what used to be the central sanctuary is now a hill of loose blocks. Your Angkor Pass covers it. The $10 ticket you’ll see quoted online is a separate one-day, one-temple pass, for people arriving without a pass at all. Gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:30 PM.
I couldn’t have made this trip as a child. The road was barely a road then, and the temple itself was close to unreachable. I’ve been going since I became a mother, and I still think it’s the closest you can get to meeting a temple the way the French explorers met them a hundred years ago. Broken. Surrounded by forest, and being eaten by it at the same time.

Does the Angkor Pass Cover Beng Mealea?
Yes. A 1-day, 3-day or 7-day Angkor Pass gets you in at no extra cost, and you should ignore any page that tells you to budget $10 on top.
The confusion is real, and it comes from the official ticket site itself. Alongside the $37, $62 and $72 Angkor passes, Angkor Enterprise sells a Beng Mealea 1 Day Pass at $10, listed as “1 Accessible Temple”. That’s the standalone option, for a traveller who wants this one temple and nothing else in the park. It isn’t a surcharge. Kbal Spean works the same way at $5.

What Makes Beng Mealea Different From Every Other Angkor Temple?
You don’t walk through this one. You walk above it.
A raised wooden walkway runs out over the ruined heart of Beng Mealea, above the collapsed galleries rather than around them. No other temple within reach of Siem Reap gives you that. Everywhere else at Angkor you move through corridors at ground level, reading walls at eye height. Here you’re looking down into the wreck of a building, at roof stones and root systems and courtyards that no longer have a way in.
It’s an odd, slightly poetic sensation. You almost fly over it.
The walkway does something practical too, which is that it gets you into a temple that would otherwise be a scramble. The centre of Beng Mealea is impassable in places.

How Far Is Beng Mealea From Siem Reap, and What Is the Drive Like?
About an hour by car from town. Published distances disagree, because they measure different routes: Angkor Enterprise says 77 km, Lonely Planet says 68, Wikipedia cites both 67 and 77. What matters to you is the clock, and the clock says an hour, east on National Road 6 towards Dam Dek and then north.
I'll say something the distance figures hide. That hour is one of the best drives in the province. Sugar palms standing over the rice, and villages going about their morning with no interest in you at all. Plenty of guests tell us afterwards that the drive was half the pleasure.
My daughter has been to Beng Mealea more than ten times since she was born. I never once got out there at her age. The hour in the car has never put her off wanting to go back, and that's my honest measure of a place.
Should You Visit Beng Mealea on Your Arrival or Departure Day?
This is the part almost nobody planning a Cambodia trip knows, and it's the way we suggest it most often.
Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, the new one, sits out at Sotr Nikum, roughly 50 km east of town. Beng Mealea is east too. So the temple is about 30 minutes from the airport, while it's an hour from your hotel. The airport is closer to Beng Mealea than the town you're staying in.

If your schedule is tight, or you simply don't want your holiday to begin with a hotel check-in, we meet you at arrivals with your guide, put the luggage in the car, and half an hour later you're standing in a collapsed temple in the forest instead of a lobby. It sets the tone for everything after it. It works just as well backwards: we collect you from the hotel on the last morning, spend an hour at Beng Mealea, and carry on to the airport from there, so the last thing you see in Cambodia is that temple and not a departure lounge.
Do the arithmetic and you'll see why we push it. Half an hour of road each way, and an hour at the temple in between. You're at your hotel by lunch on arrival day, or at the gate in good time on the way home. Neither version costs you a day.
What Changed at Beng Mealea in 2025?
The eastern causeway was rebuilt, and most pages about this temple have not caught up.
Between May 2024 and July 2025 the APSARA National Authority restored it: about 100 metres long and 13 metres wide, with 12 pillars and 13 drainage channels. The naga balustrades went back in their original positions, along with the beams and pillars underneath them, and the drainage was repaired. Before the work started, ANA officer Puth Soth described the causeway floor as collapsed, with the foundations torn apart underneath.
Leu Channora, an archaeologist with the authority, put the result plainly when the project was announced in February 2026: "Today, visitors can admire the eastern causeway in its full architectural form, especially the striking Naga balustrades on both sides."
So the approach you walk in on now is not the approach in most of the photographs online. Worth knowing if you looked at this temple two years ago and decided it was too far gone to bother with.
Who Built Beng Mealea?
Nobody knows, and that's not a rhetorical opening. There are no inscriptions at Beng Mealea. No founding stele, and no name for the god who stood in the central sanctuary.
For a long time the assumption was Suryavarman II, the king who began Angkor Wat, because the two look so alike. Then researchers at the Royal University of Fine Arts read the sculpture and the ornament the other way and argued that Beng Mealea came after Angkor Wat, not before it. That opens the door to Dharanindravarman II, the Buddhist king who reigned in the middle of the century and fathered Jayavarman VII.
Sok Visal, a technical officer at the APSARA National Authority, summed up the position in 2024: "Since there are no known existing records for us to settle the matter, we have to rely on different approaches to understand this temple's origins."
He also pointed out why a single date was never going to work. The rest hospitals and rest houses around Beng Mealea are Jayavarman VII's. The region was built up in stages, over more than one reign.
If you read a page that states flatly who built this temple, that page is guessing.
Was Beng Mealea Hindu or Buddhist?
Both, at the same time. Most of the big search results call Beng Mealea a Hindu temple and stop there, but bas-reliefs of each faith survive on different parts of the structure, and a statue of Avalokiteshvara, one of the central figures of Mahayana Buddhism, once stood in the central tower.
That mix is exactly why the dating question stays open, and it's what I tell guests to watch for as they cross the walkway.

Why Is Beng Mealea So Ruined?
The forest gets the blame, and it deserves some of it. Trees have been prising the galleries apart for centuries, and the tropical weather does the rest.
That's not the whole account, though. Sok Visal names two human causes as well. During the wars, people sheltered inside religious buildings to get away from explosives. And temples were believed to hold buried valuables, so looters dug. He notes that the practice behind that belief is still alive: builders and homeowners here will still put gold or gems into the ground at a construction site for good fortune.
There's an older theory too, kept alive in the temple literature: that the central sanctuary was pulled down deliberately, in one systematic effort, possibly during a Cham raid. The size of the rubble pile is the argument for it. Nobody has proved it.

What Does "Beng Mealea" Mean?
You'll read "lotus pond" almost everywhere. It's a loose gloss.
The original name of the temple is unknown. The name in use today came from the people living around it, and was written down by the French explorer Louis Delaporte. Beng refers to the Afzelia xylocarpa tree that grows around the site. Mealea refers to a flower that grows in a reservoir nearby.
Is Beng Mealea the Tomb Raider Temple?
No. Tomb Raider was filmed at Ta Prohm, inside the main Angkor park, in 2001. Ta Prohm sits on the small circuit, about twenty minutes from town, and our small circuit itinerary shows where it falls in a normal day.
What Beng Mealea has is the atmosphere people are chasing when they ask that question. Fallen stone everywhere, roots coming through the doorways. Almost nothing in the way of railings.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Beng Mealea?
Any month works, and daylight matters more than the season, because you don't want to be finishing an hour from town in the dark. Beyond that, the two halves of the year give you two different reasons to come.
In high season, this is where you go to see a great temple without a crowd around it. December and January put serious numbers into Angkor Wat and Bayon. They don't put them out here.
In green season, come for the colour. Asked when the temple is at its best, Sok Visal of the APSARA National Authority pointed at the rainy months, when the moss and the trees come up and the whole site turns, in his words, into something like a giant emerald. That's the low season for Cambodia bookings. For this particular temple it's arguably the peak, and I'd agree with him.
A word on timing, because most guides get the emphasis wrong. Yes, weekends and public holidays bring Cambodian families out to the temples. That's true right across the park, though, not out here in particular. At Beng Mealea the distance does the work that timing does everywhere else. It's far enough from town that it stays quiet whichever day you pick, which is the whole reason I send people who want a great temple to themselves.
What Should You Know Before You Go?

Angkor Enterprise's own page describes the site as largely uncleared, warns that some areas are difficult to walk, and recommends going with a guide who knows the paths. That's the government's advice, not our sales pitch. The walkway carries you over the worst of it, but the moment you step off it you're on uneven sandstone, and in the wet those blocks are slick.
If your knees don't enjoy that kind of ground, you'll spend the visit on the walkway looking at the parts you can't reach. That's still a good visit. It's just worth knowing before you set off.
