Angkor Wat before dawn on the first morning, sunset on the great lake at the end of the third.
This trip is built around light. It opens in the dark, 4:45 AM in your own Jeep or Vespa, so that you are standing at Angkor Wat when the towers come out of the night, and it is finished by noon. Day two takes the Grand Circuit through the quiet northern forest, done by about 2:30 PM. Day three belongs to you until early afternoon, when the Jeep runs out to the Tonlé Sap: a village on stilts, a boat of your own through the middle of it, and the same sun you watched rise over the temples going down over open water.
Into the park in the dark, the sunrise by the north pond, then breakfast, then Bayon and Ta Prohm before the day gets hot.
Day one is breakfast only, with no lunch stop, because it finishes at noon. Most guests sleep in the afternoon, and they are right to.
Seven sites on the wider loop, at a fraction of day one's crowd. Same start window, same finish, very different feeling.
Day two is deliberately the quieter one, and it is the day guests say surprised them most.

The village looks completely different depending on the water level, and neither version is the wrong one to see. Day 3 is outside the park, so no Angkor Pass is needed for it. We will not schedule it on a Phare Circus evening.
You get up at half past four for the first one. You do nothing at all for the second.
The Angkor Wat sunrise is the most photographed twenty minutes in Cambodia and most people experience it in a crowd of several hundred, having arrived on a bus at a time somebody else chose. Going in your own vehicle, with a guide who knows which side of the northern pond is worth standing on, is a different morning entirely.
Three days later you are on a boat at the other end of the day, an hour out of town, watching the same sun go the other way over open water with a drink in your hand and nothing to do. Nobody photographs that one for Instagram. It is usually the one people remember.

Si vous voulez visiter les temples à travers la forêt d'Angkor, c'est la meilleure idée de vous faufiler à l'intérieur en Vespa ! Et vous pouvez toujours profiter du coucher de soleil et rester en sécurité grâce au guide. Nous avons vraiment apprécié ! Merci !
Style Angkor VIP. Magnifique journée en compagnie de Bénédicte qui nous a emmenés hors des sentiers battus, à la découverte des trésors d'Angkor, loin des foules de touristes. Départ de notre maison en jeep d'époque. Lingettes rafraîchissantes parfumées à l'eau de jasmin. Temples à la fois splendides et isolés. Petits sentiers dans la jungle. Portes dérobées. Quelques mystères révélés grâce à sa connaissance détaillée des sites et de leur histoire. Déjeuner exquis à la maison. Une escapade indispensable et incontournable.
Excellente journée Vraiment une excursion fantastique en Vespa - un grand merci à nos trois guides qui nous ont fait nous sentir en sécurité et ont très bien pris soin de nous. Ils nous ont emmenés voir les rats détecteurs de mines (visite brillante) ce qui était inattendu, ainsi que le lac et le déjeuner. Vraiment une super journée.
Siem Reap Vespa Notre guide en Vespa a été spectaculaire. Son anglais était excellent. Il connaissait bien la ville et sa culture. Il a répondu à toutes nos questions, y compris en nous donnant des recommandations de restaurants pour d'autres sites à voir dans le pays, et a même répondu à quelques questions sur Angkor Wat que nous avions oublié de poser. Nos conducteurs ont été prudents. Nous avons également fait un tour en Vespa avec la même qualité remarquable à Hanoï.

Yes, and once. It is the single most-wanted experience in Siem Reap and the light on the towers reflected in the northern pond is genuinely worth the alarm. What ruins it for most people is the delivery: a shared bus on a fixed departure, several hundred people, and a boxed breakfast in a car park afterwards.

Our $365 three-day spends all three days in the temples. This one spends two, then hands the last day to the lake, so the trip ends on a boat at sunset instead of a third circuit. Against our 2-day sunrise combo, this is simply that trip with the lake day added on the end.
No. Your Jeep or Vespa collects you, the same vehicle you have for the rest of the day. Both are road-legal with proper headlights, so there is no need to swap into anything else for the dark leg. Tuk-tuks are used for the pre-dawn pickup on our e-bike sunrise tour only, where riding in the dark would not be safe.
Yes. Once the light is up we stop for a proper breakfast before carrying on to Bayon and Ta Prohm, and it is welcome after a 4:45 start. Where we stop depends on the day and on where you are staying, so leave that one to your guide.
No, and there does not need to be. Day one finishes around noon, so it runs on breakfast and drinks and you eat lunch wherever you want once you are back. Day two includes lunch by Srah Srang. Day three begins after lunch and has snacks on the boat.
The 3-day pass, $62 per person, bought online in advance at angkorenterprise.gov.kh rather than queued for at the office. There is no 2-day pass, so this is the pass any two-day temple visit needs anyway. Days 1 and 2 use it; the lake needs none, so the pass's third day stays spare and valid all week, good for one more temple on a free morning. Children under 12 enter free with a passport.
No. The pass is valid on any three days inside a 7-day window and the lake day needs no pass at all, so we can space the itinerary around whatever else you have booked.
Kampong Phluk, about an hour from Siem Reap, not Chong Kneas. Chong Kneas is the closest to town and the one with the documented problems: boats diverting to overpriced floating restaurants, pressured donations, and years of poor reviews to show for it. We go out on a private boat belonging to one of the Kampong Phluk families rather than on a shared twenty-seater.
The village looks completely different, and it is worth seeing either way. High water means boats mooring where people's front steps end and the mangrove reachable by paddled boat. Low water means the same houses standing clear on stilts you could park a car under, a longer approach over dry ground, and usually no mangrove trip. Tell us your dates when you enquire and we will tell you which version you are booking.
Yes, though think about the 4:45 AM start before you book it for young ones. Ages 4 to 12 get 30% off, which brings it to $206.50, and under-4s go free. Children under 12 also enter the park free with a passport. If the pre-dawn start is the problem, the same three days without the sunrise is our other option and it costs less.
