Give Siem Reap four days: two for the Angkor temples, two for everything the temples overshadow. Three days works if you accept one hard choice. Two days works only for temples, and there’s no prize for the sprint.
I was raised in Southern Angkor Pagoda, inside the walls of Angkor Wat, and I’ve planned these trips for guests since 2013. The most common WhatsApp message we get isn’t about tickets or weather. It’s someone with flights already booked, asking if their days will fit. Often it’s the flights that end up moving.
How Many Days in Siem Reap: Four, for Most First Visits
Four days splits cleanly. Two go to the Angkor Archaeological Park, because the Small Circuit and the Grand Circuit are different days, not one rushed one. The other two go to the Siem Reap that guests consistently rate as the surprise of their trip: the countryside, the lake villages, the food after dark.

Before the day-by-day, a caveat. If temples are genuinely all you came for, two days and out is a legitimate plan, and I’d rather you do it well than pad it. The rest of this page is for everyone who suspects, correctly, that Siem Reap is more than its postcard.
Two Days in Siem Reap: Temples Only, Eyes Open
- Day 1, the Small Circuit: Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, about 7 hours door to door. Start at sunrise: our private sunrise tour picks guests up at 4:45 AM and the gates open at 5:00. Route details in the Small Circuit guide.
- Day 2, the Grand Circuit: the quieter 8-hour loop past Preah Khan and Pre Rup, where the crowds thin and the trees do more of the talking.
The ticket math surprises people. There is no 2-day pass, so your second temple day means the $62 3-day ticket anyway. Details and the rules most sites still get wrong are in our Angkor tickets guide.
The trade-off. “Amazing and too fast” is how two-day guests describe it to me at the airport. You’ll have seen the temples. You won’t have met the place.

Three Days in Siem Reap Means One Hard Choice
Three days in Siem Reap works as two temple days plus one day for everything else:
- Day 1, the Small Circuit: sunrise start at Angkor Wat, then Bayon and Ta Prohm. The 7 hours that justify the trip.
- Day 2, the Grand Circuit: the quieter 8-hour loop, and an earlier night than you think you'll want.
- Day 3, option A, the countryside: the full 7-hour countryside day through the rice fields and villages.
- Day 3, option B, lake and town: Tonle Sap in the morning, the Old Market streets in the afternoon.
You can't have both. Evenings are kinder: the After Dark food tour runs 4 hours and finishes by 10 PM, so it fits either version.
Mon choix
If your third day has to carry everything: morning by the pool, our 3-hour afternoon countryside loop, then the After Dark food tour from the early evening. Three different Siem Reaps in one day, none of them a temple. It's the day guests talk about at the airport.
The Four-to-Five-Day Plan We Give Our Own Guests
This is the shape I sketch on paper napkins more often than I'd admit:
- Jour 1 : Small Circuit with the sunrise start. Sleep early; the 4:45 AM pickup is real.
- Jour 2 : Grand Circuit at an easier pace, then Phare, the Cambodian circus, in the evening.
- Day 3: The countryside day. Rice fields, villages, lunch where our drivers actually eat.
- Day 4: Tonle Sap in the morning, pool through the heat, After Dark food tour to finish.
- Day 5 (if you have it): Kulen Mountain, or simply back to your favourite temple for the afternoon light.

A Week in Siem Reap Buys the Days No Itinerary Sells
Seven days changes the arithmetic. Kulen Mountain gets its own day (and its own $20 ticket, the one site the Angkor pass doesn't cover). Battambang becomes a realistic day trip. And you can leave whole afternoons unplanned, which in this climate is not laziness but strategy.
I'll say the quiet part: back-to-back full circuits are the over-plan I most often talk guests out of. A full circuit is 7 to 8 hours, most of it on your feet. One big morning, one slow afternoon. The temples have waited nine centuries; they'll wait through your swim.
The Angkor Pass Decides More of Your Plan Than You'd Think
Three facts shape the day count. First, passes come in 1, 3 and 7 days only, at $37, $62 and $72. Second, the 3-day pass covers any three days within a 7-day window, so a rest day between temple days costs you nothing. Third, the 4:45 PM rule: a ticket dated for tomorrow admits you tonight for a free sunset, and Sras Srang at that hour is worth the early purchase alone. 3 jours sont-ils suffisants pour Siem Reap ?
Trois jours, c'est faisable : deux pour les temples, un pour le reste. Vous choisirez entre une journée à la campagne ou une journée au lac ; le tour gastronomique After Dark convient à l'une ou l'autre soirée. Un quatrième jour supprime le choix, c'est pourquoi nous le recommandons.
Combien de jours faut-il pour les temples seuls ?
Deux. Une pour le Petit Circuit, une pour le Grand Circuit. Un troisième jour de temple ne vaut la peine que pour Banteay Srei et les sites extérieurs, ou pour les photographes retournant chasser la lumière.

How many days in Siem Reap with kids?
Plan four to five, then shorten each one: a single circuit per morning and afternoons at the pool. Phare, the circus, fills an evening better than any temple. Under-12s enter the Angkor park free.
How tiring are the temple days, honestly?
A full circuit runs 7 to 8 hours, most of it on your feet in serious heat. One circuit per day is the sustainable pace. Guests who book both circuits back-to-back usually tell me afterwards the second morning blurred.

Tickets can be rebought and hotels rebooked, but a day spent badly in Siem Reap doesn't come back. That's the whole reason our tours are private: the schedule bends to your pace, not a bus's.
